Can You Get Turkish Citizenship After Living in Turkey for 5 Continuous Years?

   Can you obtain Turkish citizenship after living in Turkey for five continuous years? The short answer is yes, but completing five years of residence does not automatically make you a Turkish citizen.

   According to Article 11 of the Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901, foreigners who have lived in Turkey legally and without interruption for at least five years can apply for Turkish citizenship. However, living there for five years only gives you the right to apply; it does not guarantee approval. Each application is reviewed individually based on all legal requirements.

   During the evaluation, the following points are checked:

  • Have you lived in Turkey legally and continuously for at least five years?
  • Do your actions show that you truly intend to settle in Turkey?
  • Do you speak enough Turkish?
  • Do you have a steady, legal income to support yourself and your family?
  • Do you pose any risk to public safety or national security?

How to Become a Turkish Citizen After 5 Years of Residence?

   The citizenship application process begins only after the applicant meets the legal residence requirement. In practice, the process usually involves:

  • Reviewing whether the residence permit history qualifies for citizenship;
  • Calculating the uninterrupted five-year residence period;
  • Preparing all supporting documents;
  • Filing the application before the competent Population and Citizenship Directorate;
  • Security and administrative investigations;
  • Evaluation by the Ministry of Interior;
  • Final decision on the application.

What Documents Are Required for Turkish Citizenship After 5 Years?

   While the documents required may vary depending on the applicant’s circumstances, the following documents are generally requested:

  • Valid passport,
  • Valid residence permit,
  • Birth certificate,
  • Documents proving marital status (marriage, divorce, etc.),
  • Criminal record,
  • Documents proving income status,
  • Proof of residence,
  • Biometric photograph,
  • Records of entry into and exit from Turkey,
  • Additional documents as deemed necessary by the authorities.

  In particular, documents obtained from abroad must be apostilled or certified in accordance with the applicable procedures, have a sworn translation done in Turkey, and be notarized.

How Is the Five-Year Residence Period Calculated?

   One of the most common sources of error in citizenship applications is the calculation of the 5-year residency period. This period is calculated retroactively from the date of application. The applicant must have resided in Turkey continuously and in accordance with the law throughout this period.

   Furthermore, not all residence permits have the same effect on citizenship eligibility. Some residence permits may not be taken into account when calculating the five-year period for citizenship applications. Therefore, having your residence history evaluated by a legal expert before applying will help prevent potential loss of rights.

How Long Does the Turkish Citizenship Application Process Take?

   After an application is submitted, the case goes through various administrative stages.

  1. First, the documents are reviewed for compliance.
  2. Next, a security screening and consultations with relevant agencies are completed.
  3.  In the final stage, the case is evaluated by the Ministry of the Interior, and a decision is made.

   The processing time for citizenship applications varies from case to case. It is not possible to provide a definitive timeframe due to factors such as the applicant’s circumstances, the scope of the administrative reviews, and requests for additional documents.

What If My Turkish Citizenship Application Is Rejected?

   The rejection of a citizenship application does not mean that the process has come to a complete end. Depending on the grounds for the rejection decision;

  • Once the deficiencies have been addressed, a new application may be filed;
  • In cases where the administrative authority has taken an action contrary to the law, an action for annulment may be filed;
  • Depending on the specific circumstances of the case, different legal avenues may be considered.

   Since filing a new application or initiating a lawsuit without carefully reviewing the grounds for the rejection decision could result in a loss of rights, it is important to seek professional legal assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does completing five years in Turkey automatically grant Turkish citizenship?

No. Completing five years of lawful residence only allows you to submit an application. Citizenship is granted only after the competent authorities evaluate all legal conditions.

Which residence permits qualify for Turkish citizenship?

Not every residence permit is counted equally. Whether your residence history qualifies should be assessed before submitting your application.

Can I leave Turkey during the five-year period?

Limited absences may be permitted, but excessive time spent outside Turkey can interrupt the required continuous residence period.
